Our president Joe Smith presided over the
meeting.
There were about 32 persons in attendance.
Visitors were Bill Crist, Tom Hooker, and
Jim Morrison’s wife.
Joe Smith reported that Bob Fleming is not
in good health.

Business
Our treasurer reported that there is $3073 in the
treasury.
- There are nice new engraved nametags courtesy of Stan
Cook.
- There are still Mountaineer Woodturners hats
available for $10. See Joe or Tom.
- Joe has AAW applications.
- Next month there will be sign-up sheets for the Art
and Craft Fair.
- Tom says there is still some wood left.
Shop Tips
Tom Schottle showed some wires used for burning turnings.
Jim Morrison included several shop tips in his demo.
Show and Tell

Jim Morrison
brought in about 12 various wonderful segmented items to illustrate
his segmented turning demonstration.

In addition Jim brought in an "inside-out" vase |

and a beautiful large bowl decorated with an apple painted by a student of Jim’s
wife.

brought in a Hackberry vase |

and a couple of attractive lidded vases, one from Bradford Pear

and the other from Walnut. |

John Crede
showed us an attractive white dove he had carved (the base was
turned) from Basswood. |

John also had a very nice segmented bowl from Magnolia and Walnut,
with Ebony segment spacers. |

Bob Lett
brought in a really beautiful bowl turned from Box Elder. |

Byron Young
brought in an attractive bowl and plate from Walnut. He said they were turned in
the manner of Jimmy Clews. |

Ron Jones
showed us a very nice lidded dish from Walnut.

Wayne Schoolcraft
had another remarkable lighthouse from Walnut

and "Memory Drum" also from
Walnut. |

Clarence Clarkson
brought in a very tiny bowl, which had been turned by Pearle Kagen. He also
showed us a kitchen utensil for making pecan pies in muffin pans.

Stan Cook
showed us some of his marvelous pens.

Stan also had a wonderful Cherry bowl with
a carved rim. |
Demonstration

Jim Morrison gave a very interesting and
useful program on the construction of segmented vessels.
Some tips included in the demo were:
Do not over use sandpaper.
Wipe item with a towel between grits.
Use round paper for the inside of bowl to avoid
scratching the item.
Don’t skip a grit.
Sand slowly, at 300-400 rpm.
Use surgical clamps (found at Harbor Freight) for
holding sandpaper inside vessels.
Use square drive screws for a faceplate.
He applies 3 – 5 coats of "Armor Coat" diluted ~ 30%.
Sand with 320 grit between coats.

Miscellaneous
The Valley Woodworkers will be
having an exhibit at the "Museum in the Community" in October. (See
www.museuminthecommunity.org
).
- The Valley Woodworkers will be having their fall
festival on October 27th, to which our membership is invited. It
was a fun event last year.
- The Newsletter will be sent by e-mail to those
members who have given me their email address. This medium will contain an
HTML document in which I have included links to pictures of the "Show and
Tell" items as well as a link to the website. Those who do not have e-mail
addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US
snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.
- Please send me pictures of your work so that I can
add it to the gallery.
- The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the
