Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

April 2004

We had 21 members and 2 guests present at this meeting. Guests were Richard Collins’ son, Greg, and Joe Smith’s brother Jerry.

We understand that former member Bill Stump had multiple bypass and valve replacement surgery. We have really missed seeing Bill at our meetings and wish him well.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

May 1, 2004

Dave Shombert

Cedar Lakes

Business

The meeting was called to order by our president, Dave Jones. Several items of business were discussed.

Program

Charlie Brown gave instruction on how to use a skew. He showed how he uses the skew to make little snow people.

We then cranked up all the lathes and members were encouraged to give it a try.

Is he really turning WOOD??

We have excellent supervision.

Since Cedar Lakes did not have the dining hall operating, we worked through lunch and then left early.

Show and Tell

Dave Jones brought in a very nice hollowform from Box Elder.
He also had an attractive shallow Cherry bowl.
This bowl was meant to be much deeper, but a serious crack developed, so the bowl needed to be cut off to exclude the crack, to prevent it from cracking further.
Joe Smith showed us a gauge he had made to determine the wall thickness of a hollowform utilizing a laser. It is really slick! It is similar to a bowl depth gauge he brought in and showed us a few meetings back.
Charlie Brown brought in some examples of his skew work. There were four "little people"
and a complete scene entitled "Summer in Vermont", complete with snowmen, etc.
Tom Schottle brought in a vase
and a candleholder; both turned from white Alabaster.
Gary Gibbs showed us an attractive Walnut bowl, which had some unusual grain markings.
He was about to sell this bowl when he discovered that the bowl had a perfect figure 8 on the side. Being a NASCAR fan, Gary realized that this bowl was a keeper!
Clarence Clarkson brought in an interesting hollowform vase from Bloodwood.
He also had a nice natural edge Peach bowl
and a Walnut bowl.
Myke Hymes got there late, but he brought along a wonderful Walnut burl hollowform vase
and a very nice Walnut bowl.
Jim Smith: Yes, I finally found the on switch to my lathe. I brought in a Cherry sphere
and a little hollowform out of the same piece of Cherry.
I also brought along a Walnut bowl,
and a plate
and bowl from that horrible Buckeye. It is pretty wood, but is really terrible to turn and finish.

May 1st Meeting

Remember, the May Meeting has been re-scheduled to the FIRST Saturday, May 1st, at Cedar Lakes. The demonstrator will be Dave Shombert
