Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

April 2005

Our vice president, Tom Schottle presided over the meeting while Dave Jones went to get a chuck for the demonstrator to use on the mini lathe.

There were about 22 persons present. Visitors were Andi Wolfe and her husband.

We understand that T.K. is still having a rough time. Myke Hymes will not be able to join us for a while, as he must spend all his time with his wife. He does not even get to his shop now.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

Alan Leeland will demonstrate turning stools.

Dave Jones brought in a Cherry turned bandsaw box, a neat Box Elder 3-cornered Biased-turned bowl, and an interesting Pear vase.

Jerry Smith brought in four nice turned hats. One was a Cherry derby, one was a regular Cherry hat, and two were from Maple.

John Crede had a fascinating elaborate turning he had made in memory of the late Pope. A small box on the top contained a Rosary, which had actually been blessed by the Pope.

Tom Schottle brought in a really nice Alabaster bowl and another nice item turned from a scrap of Alabaster. He also had an interesting biased turned bowl as well as a natural edge Walnut bowl and a little bowl from Osage Orange.

Joe Keeler came over from Cincinnati to join us. He brought a square turned bowl from Cherry and a platter turned from a beautiful Walnut crotch.

Program

Andi Wolfe presented a captivating demonstration on the use of carving, painting, and pyrography to decorate her turnings.

She also had a slide show of some of her work. She brought along some examples of her finished products.

Everyone seemed fascinated by her program, and it was after 3:30 pm by the time the meeting began to break up.

Check out Andi’s work in an article by her in the AAW journal, American Woodturner, Vol. 19, No. 4, 2004, pg. 38.

The Newsletter will be sent by email to those members who have given me their email address. Those who do not have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

This email contains links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items. The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the website.

Because of the difficulty at each meeting of trying to get photos of all the items in the show and tell, this has been discontinued. I may take a couple of group photos of the whole table of items and put that only in the newsletter and on the website.

Instead of trying to add photos of all the show and tell items to the members’ gallery, I will rely on photos sent in by the members. So please send me pictures of your work so that I can add it to the gallery.
