April 2006

Our president, Joe Smith presided over the meeting.

According to the roster, there were 21 persons in attendance.

Visitors were Dave Murphy, Mark DeBord, Rob Conner, and Jim Meyer, all of whom joined. Glad to have you as part of the group!

Business and Show and Tell were kept short to give as much time as possible to our demonstrator, Mark St. Leger.

Joe Smith showed us a neat Oak bowl, which was the 5th bowl cut from a 20" piece. It was turned really thin (about 1/16").
Bill McKay brought an attractive vase from a Cherry burl.
Dave Jones showed a couple of wonderful lidded bowls. The larger one was from an Oak crotch,
and the other was from Bradford Pear.
Dave Shombert brought in an attractive Maple platter decorated with black veneer.
Dave also brought in a bowl turned by a friend who was a stroke victim who had lost use of one side of his body. He was able to turn the bowl one handed! And a very nice turning, too.
Bill Morris showed us a lidded vase he had turned from White Oak with a Cherry top.
There was a very nice legged lidded bowl turned by member, but my notes fail me. I have to plead that I do not know the owner. I apologize for this.

Demonstration

Mark St.Leger gave a wonderful program as usual.

He demonstrated a variety of techniques, but yet kept things simple. He started by turning a toothpick, and then showed how to turn a nicely shaped egg.

Mark spent some time demonstrating skew techniques, and the cause and cure of "dig ins".

He showed some surface decoration tricks, using craving and burning.

After lunch he finished up the carving. Then he showed us how to make a sphere. He sure makes it look easy - - - .

Mark finished up with a natural edge bowl.

It was a wonderful day.

Next Month’s Meeting

On May 13th Don Olson will demonstrate turning crotches. This should be a really interesting program.
