Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

March 2003

Business

Our president Dave Mays presided over the meeting.

We had 29 persons attending. There was one visitor, Jack Moles.

We have 54 members for 2003.

Glad to have Charlie Brown back. He had been in the hospital having stents installed, etc. He is now on an interesting diet, which does not seem to allow food.

The April 12th meeting is on the same day as the Woodcraft Spring Basement Sale. Therefore, we will have the meeting at the store. The sale starts at 8:00am. The meeting will be held at the store at 11:00am. Since there is no other formal program scheduled, everybody needs to bring lots for Show and Tell.

Dave Shombert brought the completed Arrowmont totem project. The completed item contains 12 spindles. Spindles were provided by Dave Jones (2 spindles), Jim Withee, Dave Shombert, Dave Sheppard, Clarence Clarkson, Don Jarrell, John Crede, Paul Weinberger, Jim Morrison, Mike Wade, and Bill McKay. Thanks to all the contributors. Special thanks to Jim Morrison for constructing the main spool to hold the spindles and to Dave Shombert for putting the whole thing together and finishing it. Joe Smith will transport the masterpiece to Arrowmont later this month.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

April 12, 2003

Woodcraft - Parkersburg

At 11:00 am

(Sale starts at 8:00 am)

Show and Tell

Dave Jones brought two birdhouses, one turned from spaulted Maple and Walnut, and the other from Cherry. He had two nice lidded vases; one was from Cherry with a Bloodwood and Ebony lid. The other was smaller with a Walnut and Bloodwood lid. Dave also had a natural-edged bowl from a Walnut crotch - beautiful grain pattern.

Bill McKay showed us two attractive natural-edged bowls he had turned from Locust and from a Cherry crotch.

Warnie Lore brought in two spaulted Maple bowls, one recent and the other made two years ago. He also had an interesting laced-up Cherry cup. There was also a nice large bowl from Chestnut boards glued together.

Joe Keeler brought in a basket and egg from plywood he had made for a competition. He also had one of his wonderful fluted hollowforms from Cherry.

Mike Wade did not bring in any turnings this time, but he did bring in a copy of "The Woodbook", an excellent reference on woods.

Dave Shombert had another of his wonderful segmented bowls.

Jim Morrison brought in a real nice Maple bowl. He did not sand it because there were too many holes in it.

Tom Schottle brought in more of his fine Alabaster turnings. He had an Alabaster and Walnut lidded vessel, with a Walnut lid. He also had a paper clip holder made from scraps epoxied together.

Myke Hymes brought in a stoppered vase from "Birds Eye" Sumac with a stopper turned from Saguaro.

John Crede had two Cherry candleholders and a wonderful bowl from Gum (?).

Program

Mark St.Leger came up from Virginia to give a wonderful program.

He began by turning an egg. This is a great project for developing technique!

He then showed us how to make a "Flip Top". It really did flip. We will see if anyone else can turn one that also flips.

He then demonstrated how he makes a threaded spherical box. He sure makes turning a sphere look simple. All I can say is that, for me, it is not so simple.

Then he turned a small top, which has a very slender stem. Pretty amazing.
