Our president Dave Mays and vice president Dave Shombert were not able to attend, so Jim Morrison was kind enough to preside over the meeting.
There were 18 members attending.
The treasurer's report shows $2413 in the treasury.
Carl reported that although Paul Payne is still in pretty bad shape, he has improved considerably.
Bob Fleming reported on the Provo, Utah, symposium: Excellent venue, well organized, and the "Instant Gallery" was excellent but not overwhelming.
Bob also gave a pitch for the up coming Cincinnati symposium. There is still time to register, although on-site housing is no longer available (There are motels conveniently located).

ANNUAL PICNIC August 16, 2003 Cedar Lakes |
Show and Tell
| Jim Morrison brought in what his wife calls his "flying saucer" - one of his wonderful large segmented hollowforms. | |
| Tom Schottle apparently ran out of alabaster and brought in some wood turnings. At the Woodcraft sale he bought a faceplate which had some wood attached, so he turned a bowl out of that wood, and wound up with a nice Cocobola bowl. | |
| He also brought in a nice bowl turned from a Cherry crotch. Tom relayed to us the bad experience he had with a recently purchased vacuum chuck, which utilizes a shop vac as the vacuum source. |
Bob Fleming has been trying to save having to buy nuts and bolts at the hardware by turning them out of wood. He has finally discovered how to chase threads really well! He had bolts with nuts from Blackwood and Bocote (?).
| Dave Jones showed us an attractive Chestnut vase with Walnut rim. | |
| He also had a natural edge Pecan bowl | |
| and a large Cherry dish. | |
| Bill McKay brought in a nice large Cherry bowl made from the same log as Dave Jones' large dish. | |
| He had a plate from a light colored Cherry | |
| and a natural edge Oak bowl. | |
| He also showed us an interesting natural edge Locust bowl, | |
| a nice natural edge Walnut bowl, | |
| and an attractive end grain Walnut plate. | |
| Warnie Lore brought in an interesting bird on a pedestal. He first turned a bowl, then carved the flying bird from the bowl. Nice piece of artwork. | |
| John Crede brought in a spectacular Cherry bowl with Bloodwood "inlay" at an angle. | |
| He also had a pair of matching candlesticks with the same inlay at the same angle. You have to see it. |
Program
Jim Morrison guided a lively discussion on safety in the wood shop before lunch.
After lunch Dave Jones gave a short demonstration on the use of his ball end mill turning tool. Several people tried it out and found that it does a nice job on end grain hollowing!
