Dave Jones substituted for our president Joe Smith.

There were about 16 persons in attendance.

We were all pleased to see Bob Fleming’s smiling face back with us.

Mountain State Arts & Craft Fair

The fair will be held July 5 – 8 this year. Set-up for our booth will be on Wednesday, July 4th , at 9:00am.

Dave Jones had the sign-up sheet for exhibitors, demonstrators, and workers. He reminded potential demonstrators that, due to insurance reasons, they must be AAW members.

Other fair details were discussed. For more information see Dave Jones or Tom Schottle. The fair website is http://www.msacf.com.

Show and Tell

Tom Schottle showed us a nice bowl he had turned from Royal Paulownia (Empress Tree). He said the wood is not really great for turning. It "fuzzes up badly.
Stan Cook brought in a really attractive bowl from Lignum Vitae. This is a very interesting, and beautiful, wood. Check out this reference: http://www.lignum-vitae.com/about.htm.
Greg Smith brought in an interesting bowl turned from Sumac.
Byron Young showed us a wonderful Walnut lidded dish.
Dave Jones brought in an attractive little bowl from Walnut
and a Bradford Pear vase.

Demonstration

Clarence Clarkson discussed some elements of design and demonstrated how to draw some basic patterns for the parabola, spiral, and ellipse.
Tom Schottlegave a short demonstration on "inside-outside" turning.

Then Tom led a discussion on shop safety. He started the discussion off by showing an xray of a dislocated finger, brought about by improper sanding technique. That caught everyone’s attention. Other topics of discussion included face shields, gloves, chuck keys, and the "spindle roughing gouge".
