Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

March 2005

Our president, Dave Jones presided over the meeting.

There were about 23 persons present. Visitors were Carl Altman, Sandy Moore, Toby Knight, and Bob McCombs. We were certainly glad to have these folks with us.

We understand that T.K. is still have a rough time. Likewise, Myke Hymes’ wife is failing. Our thoughts and prayer go out to both of these members and their families.

On the other hand, we were pleased to have Dave Mays back with us!

Dave Jones brought in a nice spaulted Chestnut vase. Also from a spaulted Chestnut crotch was a remarkable lidded hollowform. Dave had a small lidded vase turned from a Banksia pod.

Mike Wade brought in a couple of very nice large Maple bowls. He also showed us a wood sample of Lyptus, which is a Eucalyptus hybrid.

Willie Stone, a new member, brought in some really attractive bowls. Unfortunately I did not get a description of them. Two might have been Maple and the other was a deep red wood.

Tom Schottle brought in a turned bandsaw box. It really was nice even though our demonstrator, Tom Crabb, used it as an example of what not to do. Tom also had a nice Birds Eye Maple mirror frame, which I believe started out to be an even nicer platter.

Jim Morrison is still trying to tie it all together. He brought in a very nice large Poplar bowl, laced together and augmented with some inlay. Jim also showed us an attractive large Oak bowl augmented with Turquoise. He showed us, as well, several small bowls he had turned from spaulted Pin Oak.

Richard Collins brought in a gavel and gavel block along with a really nice box to hold the gavel.

U.K. Dawson brought in several attractive items he had turned from Cedar. He had three bowls, a plate, and a covered dish with a white Cedar lid. He also had a small bowl turned from a knot.

Gary Gibbs showed us a large platter (18") he had turned from Poplar. He also brought in an Oak bowl with inlay in the bottom and a nice shallow Cherry bowl. Gary had a nice set of bowls "sliced" from one chunk of Maple burl.

Warnie Lore had an attractive spaulted Oak bowl and a nice conical-base bowl along with a stand made from a woven vine.

Tom Crabb brought a number of amazing items to illustrate the techniques he demonstrated for us.

Miscellaneous

Bob Fleming highly recommends attending the Utah Woodturning Symposium in Provo, Utah, on June 16-18, 2005. Information and registration forms are available on the web at www.utahwoodturning.com/. For those without connection to the web, contact me for a copy of the registration form, or Bob for more detailed information.

Several of us recommend attending Turning 2005 presented by the Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild. This will be held near Cincinnati on October 21-23, 2005. Information and registration forms are available on the web at www.OVWG.org. For those without connection to the web, contact me for a copy of the registration form.

The Newsletter will be sent by email to those members who have given me their email address. Those who do not have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

This email contains links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items. The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the website.

Because of the difficulty at each meeting of trying to get photos of all the items in the show and tell, this has been discontinued. I may take a couple of group photos of the whole table of items and put that only in the newsletter and on the website. This month I have tried to take one photo of each presenter’s items

Instead of trying to add photos of all the show and tell items to the members’ gallery, I will rely on photos sent in by the members.

This month you should all receive a hard copy newsletter containing the present membership roster.
