Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

March 2006

Many thanks to Tom Schottle, Dave Jones and E.J. Ulland for taking notes and photographs once again in my absence. I hope I have correctly transferred the information, and have not mixed up the photos.

Our president, Joe Smith presided over the meeting.

Visitors were Dave Murphy, Mark DeBord, Rob Conner, Fred Koert, and Howard Naglor.

According to Carl, TK went back into the hospital for some more heart problems. He should be back in a rehab center by now.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

April 8, 2006 at 10:00am

Mark St. Leger will be demonstrating

Cedar Lakes

Business

"Put A Lid On It!"

Tom seems to think he forgot to mention that the missing rule of the competition was that the winner, in addition to all the other prizes, would also have the honor of doing next year’s contest. I do not remember that rule, but then would Tom lie about a thing like that?

Show and Tell

Tom Schottle, had a couple of nice platters. One was from Maple

and the other, about 20 inches in diameter, was from Cherry.

He also had a weed pot that his oldest daughter had bought at the Cedar Lakes Art and Craft Fair about 10 years ago. No one confessed to knowing who might have turned it.

Warnie Lore showed a couple of nice vases he had turned from Cherry

and Oak.

Dave Jones showed a nice vase,

a natural edge bowl, and another item which seems to have gotten mixed up.

U.K. Dawson brought in a couple of bowls that appear to be Box Elder

and a candleholder that may be spaulted Beech.

Jim Morrison had three really nice bowls from Holly,

and a segmented bowl.

Greg Smith brought some really nice natural edge bowls from Cherry,

Maple burl,

and Walnut burl.

Bill Morris showed a pencil holder and covered vessel made from Holly.

Ron Damon brought a number of items turned from stone,

and one item from an Elk Antler.

Demonstration

Ron Damon demonstrated Soapstone turning. I guess he felt we have had more than enough exposure to Alabaster turning
