Paul Payne is still in pretty bad shape from his accident with the riding mower. We need to keep him in our thoughts and prayers. A card was passed around for members to sign.
Business
Our president Dave Mays presided over the meeting.
There were 17 members attending.
The treasurer's report shows $2487 in the treasury.
We have a new CD on Woodturning by Steven D. Russell for the library.
Dave Shombert presented the possibility of bringing David Elsworth in to give a program to the group. He requires a minimum of two days, and needs to be booked two years in advance. We discussed some options such as a typical demo the first day and a for-pay workshop the second day. This will be discussed more at a later date.
Arts and Craft Fair
The Mountain State Arts and Craft Fair will be July 2, 3, 4, and 5. Set-up will be on July 1. Dave Jones and Tom Schottle are co-chairmen. They posted sign-up sheets; one for workers and one for sellers. Each seller will be assigned a number, which should appear on each item for sale.
Remember, only quality items should be exhibited for sale.
We need shelves for the show. Someone is needed to be in charge of the wood turning demonstration.
NEXT REGULAR MEETING June 14, 2003 Cedar Lakes |
Show and Tell
| Jim Morrison brought in two real nice large (at least 24 inches) bowls | |
| turned from Catalpa. | |
| Tom Schottle brought in a fine Alabaster bowl with Walnut rim and base. | |
| Walt Gerhold brought in an attractive vase he had turned from Poplar and Walnut. | |
| Dave Jones looks like he is working on his inventory for the Fair. He had a really nice natural edged bowl from a Walnut crotch. | |
| He had several vases. One was a Mulberry vase. | |
| Another was an attractive vase from Chestnut. | |
| He showed us an Apple vase with a Bloodwood rim | |
| and a nice Chestnut vase with a Walnut stopper. Dave also brought in the new "ball end mill" turning tool he made. He said it is great for hollowing, especially end grain. | |
| Warnie Lore brought in an interesting double lobed hollowed vessel from Walnut. There was something about a mistake - - but it was a fine recovery. | |
| He also had a cloverleaf dish from Oak, which required some tricky off-center turning. | |
| Warnie made one of Mark St.Leeger's "flip tops", but on a larger scale. | |
| In fact his top really did flip, | |
| but it was so large that he needed an electric drill to get it spinning. |
Program
During the morning session Tom McColley, Program Developer for Mountain Made, talked to us about developing the business aspect of woodturning. After lunch he demonstrated turning a green wood hollow vessel.

The 2001 symposium was very much enjoyed by those of us who went. I highly recommend it.
June 14th Meeting
There will be a roundtable discussion among our members on the subject of SAFETY. There was an article along these lines in the AAW Journal a couple of issues back
