May 2006

Our president, Joe Smith presided over the meeting.

According to the roster, there were about 30 persons in attendance, although only 24 signed the attendance register.

Visitors were Mac McMillian, Stu Humphreys, Jim Sowards, and G.W. Shark. Mac and G.W. decided to join. Glad to have you two as part of the group!

Business and Show and Tell were kept short to give as much time as possible to our demonstrator, Don Olson.

Joe Smith showed us a fine Oak burl nested bowl set. I think it was a nest of 5 or 6 bowls
Warnie Lore brought a really nice natural edged bowl from, we think, American Elm.
Warnie also showed us a Christmas tree top ornament he had turned from Box Elder with a white spindle. The spindle was not supposed to be white, but the spray-on lacquer turned out to be a can of white spray paint.

Dave Jones showed us a nice natural edged Cherry bowl.

Jerry Smith brought in an attractive bowl from a Sumac crotch.

Jim Morrison showed us a nice White Maple bowl with a Zebra Wood laminate band.
He also had anther smaller attractive bowl with a laminate band.
Jim also brought in one of his wonderful little segmented bowls.
Don Olsen, our demonstrator, had some really interesting pieces, all from crotches, to show. There was a 3- legged bowl from Chestnut.
A hanging work from Crab Apple was titled "Stealth 2", part of his Floating Series.
Don had 2 pieces, called "High Parab" 1, from one crotch.

Finally there was a piece called "Kansas Twister" from a Walnut crotch on a Kansas-shaped base.

Demonstration

Don Olsen came from North Carolina to show us some of the things he has been making from crotches.
He started off with a slide show of some of his pieces –

- - before and  during construction,
- - and after.
He then proceeded to develop a slab of a crotch into a large shallow bowl, which he described as a "canvas" from which a finished work could be crafted.
