Our president Joe Smith presided over the meeting.

There were again 32 persons in attendance.

Dave Stevens was visiting from Minnesota.

We were pleased to see Myke Hymes back.

No one has heard about Bob Fleming.

Business

 

Show and Tell

Delbert McCartney brought in a really attractive bowl from Service.
He also had a pretty bowl from spaulted Beech

and a square covered dish turned from Maple and spaulted Maple.

 

Tom Schottle showed us a couple of wonderful Ambrosia Maple bowls.
 

 

Tom also showed us a nested set of bowls from Cherry.
He had a large bowl turned from a Black Ash burl, which won Sue Harris’, first place award.
Dave Jones brought in a couple of nice lidded boxes from Canary wood and Walnut.
One was a "rocking box". This one took Sue Harris' second prize.
Dave also had an attractive little platter from a Pear crotch
and a really nice natural edge bowl from a Maple burl.
John Crede showed us a couple of nice segmented bowls. One was from Sassafras and Walnut.
The other was from Jonathan Apple and Brazilian Cherry with a machined decorative groove.
Joe Smith brought in a couple of really beautiful salad bowls.
Joe also had a couple of large vases turned end grain.
One was from a large burl.
Byron Young brought in an attractive bowl turned from Cherry.
Bill Morris showed us a couple of examples of Empress Tree wood (Paulownia).  
Dave Stevens, our visitor, brought in a Yew root he was turning, to get some suggestions on how to proceed.

Rich Northrop brought in a very nice bowl from Cedar.

 

Gray Gibbs showed us a flat bowl from spaulted Apple.
He also had an attractive natural edge bowl from an Oak burl
and a bowl with a rounded over rim.
Jim Morrison brought in some of the items he had worked on at last month’s demonstration. He finished them off so we could see the completed product.
 

 

Demonstration

We had a fine program Saturday!

In the morning Sue Harris discussed elements and principals of bowl design. She went over just what a judge looks for. She then critiqued several bowls that members had brought in.

After lunch she picked the top three bowls from the lot.

Then Myron Curtis demonstrated some techniques of spindle turning. He showed how he duplicates items. He uses simple tools, which he makes himself.

Miscellaneous

  • The Valley Woodworkers will be having their fall festival on October 27th, to which our membership is invited. It was a fun event last year.

  • The Newsletter will be sent by e-mail to those members who have given me their email address. This medium will contain an HTML document in which I have included links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items as well as a link to the website. Those who do not have e-mail addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

  • Please send me pictures of your work so that I can add it to the gallery.
