We had 20 members and three visitors attending the meeting. The visitors were E J Ulland, Jerry Smith (Joe Smiths brother), and Paul Smith Valley (a guest of Bob Fleming and a former member of our organization).
Joe Smith was present with a beat-up left arm. He messed it up supposedly falling from a log while cutting wood for bowls. He was due for surgery Tuesday. Everything went well and he was home Tuesday evening.
NEXT REGULAR MEETING December 11, 2002 Tom Crabb Cedar Lakes |
Business
Several items of business were discussed.
Show and Tell
| Dave Jones brought a dish he had turned from an old Pine beam that had an interesting pattern of carpenter bee holes. | |
| He showed us a really nice lidded vase turned from wormy, spaulted Chestnut. | |
| Dave also had a nice vase turned from the same piece of Walnut as last months vase | |
| Dave Shombert showed us a little segmented lidded dish he had bought in Belize, for a really low price. The workmanship left something to be desired, but not bad. | |
| Dave also brought in the Cherry and Maple vase he had entered in the "instant gallery" at Turning 2003. It was wonderful with a very unique design, requiring an interesting technique. | |
| Tom Schottle brought in a very nice Christmas tree ornament he had just turned, | |
| along with an ornament he had made when he had just begun turning, for comparison. | |
| He also had a couple of his wonderful Alabaster turnings. One was a pink candleholder | |
| and the other was a purple vase. Both of these had segmented wooden bottoms. They were supposed to have wooden rims also, but that did not work out. | |
| Warnie Lore brought in a Sycamore dish filled with a dozen eggs, each nicely turned from a different wood. | |
| Myke Hymes brought in an "Alabaster" bowl he had turned with considerable difficulty. Then he found out it was actually Marble. It turned out to be a beautiful bowl. | |
| Myke also had a vase he had turned from Box Elder. | |
| Paul Weinberger had some wonderful and unique candlesticks with laminated bases from Walnut. Since he felt they were too light, he hollowed out the bases and filled them with buckshot and paraffin. The drip rings he made from Plexiglas which were heated and bent. | |
| TK McClung brought in some nice turnings; a Cherry cup, | |
| a Holly vase, | |
| and a larger Holly vase. | |
| He also showed us a "boot saver he had made from Cherry. You will have him to demonstrate how it is used. |
Bob Fleming brought in a couple of items he had obtained from the "Turning 2003" made by Bonnie Klein. Both were threaded boxes. One was from Lucite and the other from Motane (?) with an insert in the lid. These were amazing turnings.
Program
Jim Morrison and Joe Smith gave a wonderful demonstration of the "bowl savers" they use.
Jim demonstrated how he uses the tool to cut bowl blanks which are put aside to dry, then can be re-turned when desired dryness obtained.
Joe showed how he uses his system to cut out bowls ready for finishing. He microwaves everything and finishes the bowls right away. He then demonstrated his sanding system and technique. He did a pretty good job for a guy with one good arm. His major disadvantage during the demo was that, although he can turn with one hand, he needs both hands to talk.
Using the bowl saver technoque, Joe is able to get wonderful"nested" bowls out of a single chunk of wood.
December Meeting
Tom Crabb (from Richmond) will be with us in December. He's will talk about multi-axis turning.
