Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

October 2004

I was not able to attend the meeting, but I am able to pass on some information thanks to notes taken by Dave Jones and Tom Schottle. Photos are courtesy of Tom Schottle.

Our president, Dave Jones presided over the meeting.

There were only about 10-11 members present. Visitors were Dave Robinette, Bob McCombs, and Dave Redfield. We are certainly glad these folks joined us.

Bob Flemming let us know that former member Dave Wentz was injured in a farm tractor accident. He is now home and doing OK.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

November 13, 2004

Keith Bundy will demonstrating

Cedar Lakes

Business

Show and Tell

Dave Jones brought a wonderful cedar platter.
Tom Schottle brought in some really interesting Alabaster turnings.
Jim Morrison brought in another attractive vase turned (I think) from construction laminate.
U.K. Dawson brought in a pair of plates from Walnut and a cup from Box Elder.

Program

Chris Ramsey gave an excellent demonstration. He turned a beautiful cowboy hat using both light and a measuring tool to determine the thickness. The hat was from Ambrosia Maple and was full size. He showed a method for fitting the hat to the individual, both taking the hat size and a profile of one’s head.

In the afternoon Chris turned a smaller hat from a piece he cut out of the big hat. He displayed several hats he had made, including a top hat from Walnut with sap wood on the top, a derby,

and a ball cap with several signatures including George W. Bush and several country and western singers and a race car driver.

There are also several other photos for which I have no descriptions.

November Meeting

The November meeting, on November 13, 2004, will feature Keith Bundy from Cold Springs, KY. His specialty is Christmas tree ornaments.

Miscellaneous

Chris Ramsey will be sending back to us the hats he made at the meeting, for us to auction off. Tentatively we plan doing that at the December meeting. Do not miss this opportunity to obtain a real unique Christmas present!

The Newsletter will be sent by email to those members who have given me their email address. This medium will contain an HTML document in which I have included links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items as well as a link to the website. Those who do not have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the website.
