Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

October 2005

Our president, Dave Jones presided over the meeting.

There were 23 persons present. Visitors were Art Boggs, Bill Morris, Dennie Ashby, and Gregg Smith, brother of Jerry and Joe. Tom Schottle’s brother-in-law from Minnesota also attended. We are certainly glad these folks joined us. There were some other visitors, but they did not sign the register so we do not have a record of who they were.

Tom Schottle brought in an attractive highly figured Maple dish.
He also showed us a wonderful Cherry platter he had turned. Tom seems to be turning a lot of wood now that he has his new lathe.
John Crede brought in a really attractive segmented bowl he had turned from Pear.
Mike Wade brought some of his Christmas tree ornaments as well as some examples of the ornament balls and finials in progress to illustrate his demonstration.

Mike also had a bowl from the branch wood of a Raintree
and an interesting natural edged Persimmon bowl. He really had to be careful to keep the bark on that bowl.  He showed us an all-wooden hair comb from China.
Dave Jones brought in a Walnut bowl
and a neat Christmas tree top ornament.
He also showed us an interesting vase from Bradford Pear that was just beginning to spault.
He also had a hollowform from a piece from Pear limb, which was not yet finished.

An anonymous turner showed us some really nice hand mirrors turned from African Walnut,

Bill McKay showed us an interesting bowl he had turned from Royal Paulownia (Empress Tree)
and a beautiful platter from an Oak burl.

Joe Smith brought a couple new Glaser gouges with the "Michealson grind". He says they "can not get a catch".
