Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

September 2003

We understand that Paul Payne was to be moving to the Riverside nursing home.

We had 25 members attending the meeting. There were also three guests. Gary Clark from Hurricane was a guest of Phil Selman. Mike Wade brought along guest Dick Esker. We were pleased to have Mary Smith, wife of Joe Smith, join us.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

October 11, 2002

David Wentz and Election of Officers

Cedar Lakes

Business

Several items of business were discussed.

The nomination committee for new club officers met with some prospective nominees. We will plan to have the election at the October meeting.

We were reminded that dues and ballots are due for the AAW.

Show and Tell

Since we had a guest demonstrator, the show and tell was dispensed with quickly so I have probably missed some information.

Dave Jones showed us a very nice Maple urn.
He brought an interesting "space needle"
and a "rocking bowl from Maple and Ebony.
Mike Wade had a wonderful natural edged bowl from sassafras (?).
Tom Schottle brought in some of his wonderful Alabaster turnings. He showed us a pink Alabaster bowl
and a white Alabaster bowl
and a pink Alabaster candleholder. The Alabaster bowls were rimmed with wood.

Jim Morrison and Mike Wade were mentioned in a Woodcraft ad in "Country Living" magazine.

Bill McKay brought some fine bowls he had turned. He had a large Maple bowl
and a natural edged bowl from a Cherry crotch.
There was a very nice covered dish from Walnut, Cherry, and Hickory.
He had an interesting natural edged bowl from Locust (?).
Gary Gibbs brought a nice bowl from (I believe) Box Elder.
He had a couple of real nice bowls from a 300 pound Oak burl.
Paul Weinberger showed us an incredible "open" segmented turning from Holly. The item was glued together, then turned - very carefully.
T.K. McClung showed us a sample of some wooden headstock hand wheels he has made for a Mercury lathe. He uses "Acragel" for the threads.
Walt Gerhold brought in an interesting item he had turned which he calls a bathroom facility.

Program

A fine demonstration was given by Linda Van Gehuchten.
She showed us how she turns her wonderful little angels.

October Meeting

Dave Wentz will give us a demonstration of spindle turning. We will also hold election of officers.

November Meeting

Jim Morrison and Joe Smith will demonstrate their coring tools.

December Meeting

Tom Crabb (from Richmond) will be with us in December. He's will talk about multi-axis turning.

For Sale

Clarence Clarkson says that he has accumulated more wood than he will ever use, and therefore will bring some to the October meeting for sale at very reasonable prices. There are some 2" cedar squares, some 38 year old walnut pieces, a couple of cedar logs and other odds and ends. He will donate 10% of the sales to the club.

Mail Box

We received a note from a new store called ART GARDEN in Hurricane featuring fine arts and crafts made in WV. They would like to advise members, who might be interested in marketing their products, about the store. Additionally, they are in search of a WV woodturner who makes knitting needles. Contact:
