Our vice-president, Tom Schottle presided over the meeting in Dave Jones’ absence.

There were 23 members and four visitors present. The visitors were James McGinley, Fred Koert, Jerry Cornell, and Myrtolyn English. We are certainly glad these folks joined us.

Show and Tell

Tom Schottle brought in a nice bowl from Mahogany, which he had decorated with some surface augmenting techniques learned from Irene Grafert.
He also showed us a wonderful Maple platter he had turned on his new lathe.
Jim Morrison brought in a really attractive bowl turned from Paralam and Paduak.
Mike Wade brought some fine Walnut bowls. One was "burley".
 Another, from the same tree, was spaulting in the heartwood, which is unusual for Walnut.
He had another nice Walnut bowl from a different tree.
 Mike also brought an attractive bowl from Kentucky Coffee Tree.
Bob Lett showed us a really nice bowl he had turned from spaulted Beech.
Dave Shombert brought in a couple of items he had entered in the competition at the Stonewall Jackson Jubilee. One was a wonderful segmented vase.
The other, a flat vase from Cherry and Ash, took the red ribbon!
Bill McKay showed us an interesting bowl he had turned from a Jackson county burl.
John Crede brought a couple off-center-turned toothpick holders to illustrate the topic of his demonstration. One was from Osage Orange and the other Red Cedar.
 John also had a really nice bowl from Gum.

Annual Wood and Tool Auction

There was lots of nice wood to be auctioned this year thanks to Kermit. There were some nice tool bargains in addition to a nice piece donated by Irene Grafert. The auction netted our organization about $490. Thanks for the tool and wood donations. And special thanks to our auctioneer, the renowned Bob Fleming!

Program

John Crede gave an interesting demonstration utilizing off-center-turning to produce one of his famous toothpick holders. He carefully demonstrated each phase of construction, showing us the techniques and tricks.

 

Next Month’s Meeting

On October 8th we will have the opportunity to see how Mike Wade makes his wonderful Christmas Tree Ornaments. Be sure and be there at 10:00am at Cedar Lakes.

 

Miscellaneous

There will be a craft show in Milton on November 11 & 12. Call 304-757-9942 for information.

The Newsletter will be sent by email to those members who have given me their email address. This medium will contain an HTML document in which I have included links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items as well as a link to the website. Those who do not have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

Instead of trying to add photos of all the show and tell items to the members’ gallery, I will rely on photos sent in by the members. So please send me pictures of your work so that I can add it to the gallery.
