September 2007
Our president, Joe Smith presided over
the meeting.
We are very saddened by the loss of Bob
Fleming, one of our charter members. He will be very much missed by our
organization, and all those who knew him.
About 20 persons were in attendance.
Visitors were Tom Schottle’s nephew and a member of the newly organized
Lewisburg AAW chapter. We were also glad to have new member, John Sheets, join
us.

Business
Joe Smith proposed that a plaque be placed on the
Powermatic lathe which would state that it was the property of Mountaineer
Woodturners - - in memory of Bob Fleming. This is a bit ironical in view of
his feelings about Powermatic lathes.
- We have an opportunity to have
Alan Lacer to give a demonstration.
He will be passing through the area on Monday, October 8th. A
motion was made and passed to have Alan Lacer give a demonstration at Cedar
Lakes Monday evening (October 8th) starting at 4:00 pm. Expenses
are to be taken out of the club treasury. Tom Schottle will make the
arrangements.
- The Valley Woodworkers is still planning to have
an exhibit at the "Museum in the Community" in October. (See
www.museuminthecommunity.org).
Our group has been invited to enter items. These may either be designated
for sale (30 % of the sale going to the museum) or not for sale.
- The Valley Woodworkers will also be having their
fall festival on October 27th, to which our membership is
invited. It was a fun event last year.
- Remember - - The October meeting has been moved to
the First Saturday.
Jim Morrison made a motion that an additional duty
of the president be to act as auctioneer for the annual tool and wood
auction. This was a function always carried out in the past by Bob Fleming.
The motion was passed.
- Jim Morrison brought to our attention that Trans
Allegheny Books in Parkersburg is opening a gift shop. They will be in the
market to buy local art and craft items to sell in this shop. This will not
be a consignment situation. For information contact Mike at Trans Allegheny
Books at 304-422-4499.
- Clarence pointed out that there is a new arts and
craft shop,
Downtown Depot, in Huntington, which is also in the market for turned
items to sell.
Shop Tips
Clarence Clarkson presented shop tips for the month.
- Sanding: He uses an old hole saw, with the teeth
ground off, in a drill press to cut out sanding disks.
- Glue: He showed us the glues he prefers. He also
likes to use the glue dispenser bottles for dispensing Watco.
- He has good luck with water based polyurethane.
- He showed us a neat chuck that he uses for making
jar lids.
- He showed us a nice handle for "burning wire".
- He had several jigs he uses for making perfume
bottles and pens.
Show and Tell
Tool and Wood Auction
The auction as usual was a lot of fun,
and a lot of bargains were to be had. The club treasury took in about $300.
Pulmonary Function Tests
Byron Young presented a short
PowerPoint description on the lungs and pulmonary function. He described how the
lungs function to deliver oxygen to the body, and how the pulmonary function
tests are carried out and what they mean. After lunch he carried out a pulmonary
function test on all those interested. We all checked out in the normal range.
We really wish to thank Byron for all
this.
